The Field Research Specialist will be responsible for supporting various field trial projects for all contract research services offered by Alpha Ag Research. Primary attention will be given to managing several scientific studies by ensuring the execution of multiple corn and soybean field trials. This includes critical evaluation and proper implementation of protocols and procedures to create high quality experimental data to clients in a timely manner. Responsibilities will focus on execution of product efficacy studies applied to small plot trials of corn and soybean row crops following defined research protocols.
The Field Research Specialist will support the Research Director in implementing a variety of field trials primarily near Sanborn, Iowa as well as satellite locations across northern Iowa and northeast Nebraska. Administering procedures that ensure quality, efficiency and safety are of upmost importance.
The successful candidate will possess a positive attitude, integrity and willingness to learn. Attention to detail is a must. Basic agronomic skills and ability to work outdoors in a field setting will be required. Farm background is preferred but not required. The ability to properly operate, calibrate and adjust research equipment as-needed is essential. Basic mechanical aptitude is also required to assist as needed with fabrication, repair, calibrations and routine maintenance of research equipment including, but not limited to, tractors, planters, liquid side-dress equipment, sprayers and combines.

Responsibilities:
- Administer and provide oversight of field trials of corn and soybean trials following established protocols.
- Protocol review, trial preparations, planting, field plot maintenance to include spraying and fertility applications, data collection and harvesting research trials.
- Participate in task-related document creation and process review for job-related activities.
- Ensure that company assets are well-cared for, calibrated, and properly maintained.
- Ensure timely planting and harvest to support quality data collection necessary for project reports and statistical analysis.
- Communicate as needed with clients to ensure clarity and execution of project details.
- Accountable for safe transportation of research equipment to and from testing sites.
- Seasonal overnight travel is required, but limited.
- Documented individual leadership skills including excellent organizational and record keeping skills.
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary research team.
- Ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Experience with large or small plot field research.
- Familiarity with field research methodologies.
- Knowledge of crop production, farming practices, farm equipment operation and repair.
- Ability to travel overnight seasonally approximately 15 nights per year.
- Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet programs.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Possess Iowa commercial applicator license (categories 1A, 1B, 1C and 10) or ability to obtain.
- Excellent mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to obtain a Class A CDL.
- Occasional lifting of up to 60 lbs.
- BS in Agronomy, Weed Science, Plant Science or an Agricultural related area of study.
- Field research experience is highly desirable.
- Experience with use and operation of drones for agronomic data collection is highly desirable.
